Overview

Farmer Brothers has an excellent opportunity for a Quality Lab Assistant (Green Coffee). This role will be Responsible for assisting in maintaining Green Coffee lab according to internal and industry standards This individual supports the activities that includes sample preparation of green coffee for cupping, physical analysis, tasting and data entry for tracking, reporting and documentation.  The Green Coffee Quality Lab Technician provides general administrative support to ensure team readiness for growth and supports the green coffee and product development staff in the evaluation of green coffee pre-shipment and arrival samples, new and existing products, and the compliance of multi-site production with established quality standards and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Receipt and review of samples from green coffee suppliers and multiple production sites for cupping, testing and evaluation
  • Set up and prepare/make samples, including, roasting, grinding, dosing, room set up and test protocol for GC cupping and production finished goods evaluation and testing
  • Prepare and set up samples and rooms for sensory tasting events, physical evaluation, and sample preparation
  • Registers samples into cupping Information system, builds tests, recruits internal tasters, and executes panels in a timely manner
  • Follows all safety policies and general housekeeping practices to ensures the area and equipment and supplies are neat
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a “World Class” lab based on the 5S standards.
  • Support Green Coffee and Product development staff and leaders with samples and assistance when and where needed
  • Support of general sensory activities, calibration and training sessions for green coffee and finished goods
  • Calibrate and maintain lab equipment such as moisture analyzers, scales, brewers, thermometers, pH meter, etc.
  • Daily participation in all sensory activities including ingredient evaluation and tasting of finished good products
  • Retrieving green coffee samples from the warehouse
  • Overall lab maintenance, organization and clean up and physical organization of samples in the lab.
  • General administrative and documentation support for sensory activities

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree in in Food Science, microbiological, Chemistry, or other related filed preferred or equivalence experience in manufacturing QA/QC laboratory
  • Ideally 1-3 years’ experience in coffee, either as a barista, roaster, or cupper. Experience in sensory activities, 2-4 years minimum desired.
  • Minimum of 1 year’ operating Windows and associated Microsoft Office applications, specifically: MS Word, Excel.
  • Coffee cupping and tasting skills preferred
