  • Overview

    This role will be responsible for assisting in maintaining the laboratory (Green Coffee or Product Development) according to internal and industry standards.  This individual supports the activities that include sample preparation of coffee prototypes or Green Coffee for cupping, physical analysis, tasting, equipment calibration and data entry for tracking, reporting and documentation.  The Product Development Lab Assistant provides general administrative support to ensure team readiness for growth, supports the development process of new and existing products, and helps with customer maintenance, productivity initiatives, bench-top, competitive samples and sensory evaluation activities.

    Responsibilities

    • Support Product Development staff and leaders with roasting, product formulation, productivity projects, production trials, sample evaluation, and assistance when and where needed.
    • Request coffee sample from multiple production sites, roast, grind, flavor, and package prototypes and customer samples. 
    • Organize, prepare, and set up samples for sensory tasting events, including analytical, physical evaluation and sample preparation.
    • Ensure lab supplies, ingredients, and raw materials (green coffee) are on hand and within specified shelf life for use. 
    • Registers samples into the Sensory Information system, builds tests, recruits internal tasters, executes panels and documents results accurately and in a timely manner. 
    • Support coordination of receipt and review of samples from multiple production sites and green coffee suppliers for testing, evaluation, and sensory validation. 
    • Calibrate and maintain lab equipment such as color devices, grinders, moisture analyzers, scales, brewers, thermometers, pH meter, etc. 
    • Participate in all sensory activities including green coffee evaluation and tasting of finished good products.
    • Maintain a professional lab environment: clean and organize, keeping physical samples, files, and record data properly. 
    • Follow all safety policies and general housekeeping practices. Ensures the laboratory area and equipment and supplies are neat. 
    • Contribute to the maintenance of a "World Class" lab based on the 5S standards. 
    • Maintains accurate records of sensory validation and analytical results.
    • Other duties as assigned. 

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 1-3 years equivalent experience in manufacturing QA/QC laboratory.  Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, microbiological, chemistry, or other related filed preferred.
    • Ideally 1-3 years' experience in coffee, either as a barista, roaster, or cupper. 
    • Experience in sensory activities, 2-4 years minimum desired. 
    • Minimum of 1 year operating Windows and associated Microsoft Office application, specifically: MS Word, Excel. 
    • Coffee cupping and tasting skills preferred.
    • Ability to operate analytical lab equipment, such as sample roaster, moisture meters, brewers, grinders, Agtron and Mocon machines, etc. 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Good organizational skills and time management abilities. 
    • Ability to multi-task, with fine attention to detail and work independently. 
    • Ability to be a team player, be punctual, and follow instructions. 
    • Ability to keep work area clean and organized.
